General Information
Small department, based in six houses. Access is difficult for those with severe disabilities, as there are no ramps, lifts or disabled toilets. Lectures are generally held in the Mill Lane Lecture Rooms and the library is contained within the Mill Lane Library, both accessible — see separate entries.
Smoking
No smoking anywhere in the building.
Medical facilities
First Aiders nearby.
Emergency procedures
Advise reception if you will need help evacuating in an emergency, as there are no special evacuation facilities.
Physical Access
Entrances
Two steps to main entrance from pavement of Silver Street. No bell or ramp, and no level access to the building. Low reception counter on left.
Number of floors
Four floors in total, including basement.
Lifts and stairs
Stair access only. Stairs down to the basement are steep and winding, and not recommended for those with mobility problems. Stair have handrails, not entirely continuous.
Lecture theatres
Lectures generally held in Mill Lane Lecture Rooms, which are accessible to wheelchair users — see separate entry for Mill Lane Lecture Rooms.
Seminar/teaching rooms
Study/supervision room in basement, accessed only be steep winding stairs. Supervisions can be held in accessible locations if needed, but please arrange in advance.
Library
Lower level of Mill Lane Library, accessible by lift — see separate entry for Mill Lane Library. Periodicals are in the gallery upstairs, but can be fetched by the librarian if needed.
Computer facilities
Accessible computer facilities in Mill Lane Library. There are some computers in the basement of the main department building, accessed only by stairs.
Toilets
No disabled toilet. There is one on the ground floor of Mill Lane Lecture Rooms.
