General Information
General
Department is spread over three buildings — main building, Microbiology and Molteno. Some of the department is also based at Addenbrooke's Hospital. Almost all facilities can be found in the main building, to which access is good.
Smoking
No smoking anywhere in the buildings.
Medical facilities
First aiders and a first aid room in the main building.
Emergency procedures
Evacuation chairs fitted on the first floor in the main building.
Physical Access
Entrances
Main entrance off Tennis Court Road has three steps to ground floor. Ramped back entrance leading to the lift, installed access control reader which releases the door. Security system in place so arrange in advance if a first time visitor.
Number of floors
Five floors in total, including ground floor.
Lifts and stairs
Lift access to all floors except the third floor. Stairs are marked and have handrails.
Lecture theatres
First floor, with level access from the lift. Wheelchair lift accessible through the front door. Tiered seating, with space for wheelchairs and other chairs at the front of the theatre.
Seminar/teaching rooms
Four height-adjustable laboratory desks available. Level access to laboratories from the lift, but can be quite narrow between benches.
Library
Second floor, with level access from the lift. Spacious, with moveable furniture. Staff will help during office hours. Security system access out of hours.
Computer facilities
Computers available in the library.
Toilets
Disabled toilets on the ground and fourth floors.
Common rooms
Level access to the canteen from the lift. Spacious inside, with moveable furniture.
Other
- Microbiology building nearby has only step access, and no lift to upper floors. All facilities in this building are also in the main building.
- Molteno building nearby has only step access, and no lift to upper floors. All facilities in this building are also in the main building.
- Addenbrooke's facilities are all fully accessible, and there are many disabled toilets on site.
Visual Impairments
Assistance dogs
Assistance dogs welcome in public areas, but discuss in advance if you want to take your dog into a laboratory.
Computer facilities
Currently no special hardware or software for visually impaired users.
Large print, Braille and audio
Large print information can be obtained on prior request.
Library and magnification equipment
Photocopiers available throughout the main building for text enlargement.
Signs and wayfinding
Good, clear signs around the department.
Other
- Generally good lighting.
Hearing Impairments
Induction loops
Induction loops in the lecture theatre and the seminar room. Portable induction loops available from the reception.

- Vibrating fire alarms available from the reception.
