Location, Services and Transport
New Museums Site, near Pembroke Street entrance. See separate entry for New Museums Site. There is also a sub-department at Madingley village.
General Information
Large department, including Museum of Zoology on the same site and sub-department at Madingley village.
Smoking
No smoking anywhere in the buildings.
Medical facilities
Five first aiders in the department and two at the sub-department. First aid room on first floor corridor.
Emergency procedures
Evacuation chairs fitted and trained staff available.
Physical Access
Entrances
Main entrance up steps. Access at museum entrance, via steep ramp with handrail, steps or wheelchair lift, and power-assisted door. Then up stairs with handrail or wheelchair lift (key on request), and through automatic push-button doors.
Number of floors
Five floors, including basement, in main building and on museum side. The sub-department is on one level.
Lifts and stairs
Lifts to all floors.
Lecture theatres
Main lecture theatre near reception. Level access via museum entrance (as above) through push-button doors. Tiered, with designated wheelchair space. Fixed, narrow, bench seating, with no handrails down steps. Stair climber at fire exit of main lecture theatre. Part 2 theatre is upstairs, accessed by lift.
Seminar/teaching rooms
Most teaching rooms and laboratories on ground floor, accessed via museum entrance. Variable height benches in the Elementary and Computing laboratories. Power assisted doors in Elementary laboratory.
Library
On first floor. Level access from lift, through double doors. One step to all bookshelves and reading area. Staff will help.
Computer facilities
Part 2 computer facilities on second floor, with level access from lift.
Toilets
Disabled toilets in foyer of museum entrance and museum basement, and one on first floor of main building.
Common rooms
On second floor, with level access from lift. Spacious, with moveable furniture.
Museum
Museum of Zoology has level access from foyer through two sets push-button automatic doors. Lift to lower floor. Mid-level only accessible by stairs, with handrail, but can be seen from above. Smooth and spacious. Phone at entrance available for emergency assistance.

- Whale skeleton outside museum has step access only.

Computer facilities
Department has voice-recognition software and physiotherapy for staff with repetitive strain injury.
Large print, Braille and audio
Large print information on prior request. Leaflet on University Museums and Galleries available from museum reception when open.
Library and magnification equipment
The library has individual reading lamps at each reading desk. Photocopier available.
Signs and wayfinding
Signs in museum are fairly large and clear.
Other
- Excellent lighting in museum.
- Slide presentations are projected onto large screen at front of lecture theatre. There are no repeating monitors in the lecture theatres.
- Slides, instructions, demonstrations and microscope images are relayed to video monitors distributed throughout the Elementary Laboratory.

Induction loops at reception, both lecture theatres, first floor and basement seminar rooms.

- Main lecture theatre is large and echoey. PA system in main lecture theatre and Elementary Laboratory.
