General Information
The School of Clinical Medicine encompasses many departments and divisions, mostly based at Addenbrooke's. The school's lecture theatres, seminar rooms, library, student common room and administrative offices are in a central building near the main Addenbrooke's entrance. Note that the first three years of an undergraduate medical degree are mostly taught in the University's Biological Sciences departments on the Downing Site.

No smoking anywhere on site.
Medical facilities
First aiders in the main school building. Hospital on site.
Emergency procedures
There are two evacuation chairs in the main school building and there are staff trained to use them.
Physical Access
Entrances
Level access to main entrance of main school building through automatic doors. Smooth and spacious reception area, with low counter.
Number of floors
Four floors in total, including basement.
Lifts and stairs
Lift to all floors. Stairs all have continuous handrails.
Lecture theatres
William Harvey lecture theatre is very large, with tiered fold-down seating. Some space at the front for wheelchairs, please report to Reception on arrival to arrange access. Lecture theatre 2 has level access, tiered seating, but some room for wheelchairs.
Seminar/teaching rooms
Seminar and meeting rooms all on ground floor or with level access from the lift. Spacious and carpeted, with moveable furniture.
Library
Central Medical Library —see separate entry for Medical Library. Spread over two floors. Outside lift to upper floor (older journals), but arrange in advance. Carpeted, with high, narrow shelves. Plenty of workspace and some seats with armrests.
Computer facilities
Large computer room in library, with level access from lift and plenty of space inside. Wireless internet in library, and network cards available from reception. Large computer room on ground floor for members of the Medical School only.
Toilets
Wide cubicles inside men's and ladies' toilets in basement. Wide cubicle inside ladies' toilet in library, which could be adapted for wheelchair users.
Common rooms
Large common room on ground floor. Level and smooth, with moveable furniture. Some chairs with armrests. Some computers, but on fairly high desks.
Other
- Cafeteria open to NHS Clinicians, University staff and Clinical students. Serves drinks, snacks and lunches weekday office hours. Level, spacious, with moveable furniture and some seats with armrests.
- There are also several accessible public refreshment outlets on the ground floor of the main hospital.
Visual Impairments
Assistance dogs
Assistance dogs welcome in main school building. Please discuss in advance if you want to take your dog into laboratories or the hospital.
Computer facilities
The software 'Zoomtext' to improve on-screen legibility is installed on one work station in the Clinical School Library's level 4 IT suite. The software requires a USB dongle to work, which is held by the Library reception and given out to users on request - this was tested on installation with positive feedback.
Large print, Braille and audio
Large print information on prior request. No touch readable or audio information in lift.
Library and magnification equipment
Magnifying glass available in library. Other magnification equipment could be acquired if necessary. Photocopier available in library for text enlargement.
Signs and wayfinding
Mostly good, clear black on silver signage around the building. Bright labelling used in library.
Other
- Excellent lighting in lecture theatres, seminar rooms, library, common room, and generally around the building.
- Stairs are all marked, and have continuous handrails.
Hearing Impairments
Induction loops
Induction loops in William Harvey lecture theatre and smaller lecture theatre of main School building.
Other
- Carpeted and fairly softly furnished throughout main school building.
- William Harvey lecture theatre is very large, but again softly furnished.
Specific Learning Difficulties and Mental Health Issues
If a student experiences problems related to a disability during the course, support is provided by the tutorial system, Counselling Service and the Accessibility and Disability Resource Centre.
Other Useful Information
A disability need not prevent you from becoming a doctor if you can fulfil the rigorous demands of professional fitness to practice. If you have a disability, you should contact an Admissions Tutor and the University's Accessibility and Disability Resource Centre as early as possible to discuss your needs and the requirements of the course.
