General Information

Provides support, advice and training courses to members of the University regarding University computing facilities. Many resources are available online. There are staff who specialise in dealing with assistive technologies. Please contact the Service Desk with questions about special hardware or software to help with disabilities and Upper Limb Disorder, much of which is available for trial use.

Opening hours

Reception is open 9am–5pm Monday, Tuesday and Thursday, 10am–5pm Wednesday or 9am–4.30pm Friday. Service Desk is open as for reception, but closes for lunch between 1pm and 2pm each day.

Physical Access


Level ground floor access through manual double doors, and large lift on your left. Reception, Service Desk and Balfour Macintosh room located on second floor of Cockcroft building. Phoenix teaching rooms are ramped with automatic doors. Arrange in advance to access Titan teaching rooms.

Number of floors

Main reception on second floor of Cockroft building. Phoenix rooms are ground level. Titan teaching rooms on second floor of Arup building.

Lifts and stairs

Large lift in Cockroft building. Lift to Titan teaching rooms in Arup building from Babbage lecture theatre podium — arrange in advance.


Disabled toilet at the back of Phoenix building — follow signs to Hopkinson lecture theatre through automatic door. Disabled toilet available during open hours on Cockcroft Floor 2. Ask at reception for access.

General access

  • Service desk and reception area in Cockroft building is spacious and accessible, with a large carpeted waiting area and several chairs. Low information leaflet rack.
  • Phoenix user area has workstation with electrically adjustable height desk.
  • Titan teaching rooms have workstation with electrically adjustable height desk and are accessible, but again rather awkward for wheelchair users — arrange in advance.

Visual Impairments

Good, clear, white-on-blue signs. Touch-readable and Braille buttons in lift. Advice on software and hardware for visually impaired users available — contact the Service Desk. The Disability Resource Centre can also help with this.

Computers in teaching rooms can be configured to use larger fonts or different backgrounds, and a range of accessibility software is available on the systems. All computers have audio output sockets. Antiglare/radiation filters are available on request.

Information leaflets and training material can be provided in alternative formats on prior request.

Hearing Impairments

  • All teaching rooms and reception have induction loops.
  • Help desk area is carpeted and quiet.

Other Useful Information

  • Evacuation chairs are fitted near lifts. First aiders available whenever open.
