The Graduate Union (GU) is the University-wide students’ union that is the primary representative of graduate and mature undergraduate students at Cambridge.  It offers a range of practical services to students from its premises, including soft and hard binding, printing, and gown, and holds a variety of events throughout the year.

 The GU’s personnel consists of two elected sabbatical officers- the President and Vice-President, a third sabbatical officer shared evenly with CUSU- the Welfare and Rights Officer, and a full-time Manager. There is also a team of part-time officers who spearhead the GU’s student-facing work, running events and campaigns, for instance

At the GU’s 17 Mill Lane premises, which it shares with CUSU, the Students’ Unions’ Advice Service can be found. The Advice Service is a source of confidential, independent support to all students at the University of Cambridge, and is able to provide professional support and advice to students on any issue they may encounter during their time at Cambridge.

The GU/CUSU building is also home to a lounge which is open to students as a space to work or relax during the day, and is available to hire by societies in the evenings and at weekends.

Opening hours

The lounge and front-desk (from which services such as printing and binding can be accessed) are open 9am-6.30pm on weekdays during full term, and 9.30am-2.30pm outside of full term.

17 Mill Lane in Old Press Site. See separate entries for 17 Mill Lane and Old Press Site. he main entrance to the GU is best accessed via Silver Street, along the short driveway opposite Ede & Ravenscroft and through the white door on the right.

No parking is available, unless by prior arrangement.

Entrances

Access to front entrance via steps or wheelchair lift (max weight 400kg).

Number of floors

There are three floors.

Ground floor: Street level and main entrance

First floor: Reception and services (incl. printing and binding, the GU offices, the CUSU/GU Lounge, the Students’ Unions’ Advice Service.

Basement: CUSU, RAG and TCS offices

Lifts and stairs

Lift and stairs to all levels.

Toilets

Accessible toilet available on basement level and first floor, each with handrails and emergency cord. There are also multiple gender neutral toilets on both levels.

General access

Access for those with physical disabilities is generally good, with wide doors and plenty of space. Moveable furniture in the lounge. There is no level access to the mezzanine area.

Visual Impairment.

  • Sign at main entrance, and large print signage indoors. Please ask for assistance if needed.

  • Large print information can be provided on prior request.

Hearing Impairments

  • One portable induction loop – contact the Disabled Students’ Officer to access.
