General Information

The Senate House is a central University building, used for the University's main ceremonial events. A permanent ramp has recently been built to enable easy access to the ground level.

Opening hours

Open only for events, for most of which tickets are required. No entry for the general public.


Located on King's Parade, opposite Great St Mary's Church and adjacent to Senate House Passage.


No parking available. There are several disabled bays on King's Parade. Lion Yard car park is also nearby.

Physical Access


Permanent ramped entrance through east door.

Number of floors

Ground floor plus an upper gallery.

Lifts and stairs

The gallery has only stair access.


Disabled toilet in main building nearby. Other toilets available in the basement of the Cockerell building in Gonville and Caius College.

General access

  • Most areas of the ground level are accessible for wheelchair users.
  • Primarily chair seating, with some benches.
  • Please advise your College if you need to reserve a ground floor seat or wheelchair space, upon application for tickets.

Visual Impairments

  • No electric lighting in the Senate House. All light is natural window light.
  • Information in other formats, for example large print or Braille, is not usually made available. Your College may be able to help provide this if needed and requested well in advance.

Hearing Impairments

Induction loop installed and working during all events where a microphone is used. This does not include degree ceremonies.
