Location, Services and Transport

JJ Thomson Avenue, off Madingley Road. Around two miles from city centre. Currently signposted ‘Cavendish Laboratory’. A quieter pedestrian/cycle path runs along the Coton footpath.

Nearby colleges

Churchill, Fitzwilliam, and Murray Edwards Colleges are fairly close by.

Traffic

Madingley Road is very busy, particularly at peak times. Pavements are wide but uneven. Cars are allowed on site, but there are speed and parking restrictions in place. Ongoing construction activities may lead to temporary disruption or diversion.

Services and shops

‘West’ cafeteria near main entrance, open 9.30am–4pm, fully accessible, with a disabled toilet. Some picnic benches outside, and furniture of various heights inside.

Vehicle entrances

JJ Thomson Avenue is the main access road from Madingley Road, signposted ‘Cavendish Laboratory’.

Parking

Parking available at various locations around site. Please contact your individual department to arrange parking for your visit or a regular parking permit.

Other transport options

Uni 4 and Citi 4 buses access the West Cambridge site. Madingley Road Park and Ride nearby. Pedestrian/cycle path to rear of site along Coton footpath.

All departments and faculties have their own first aiders. No central medical facilities.

All buildings have their own evacuation procedures and facilities.

The site is newly built, and designed with access in mind. Construction is still taking place in various locations around the site, which may lead to temporary disruption or diversion.

Physical Access

Pedestrian entrances

The Coton footpath at the rear of the site is level and accessible to pedestrians. Pavements are wide and even.

General accessibility

The site is very large, so plan carefully if you have mobility difficulties. Surfaces are generally level and smooth, with even paving and tarmac. There are many dropped kerbs at convenient points.

Steps and ramps

Few steps or ramps needed, as most of the site is level and accessible.

Benches and seating

No benches or other rest points, except at West cafeteria. The site is very large.

Toilets

Disabled toilets in all individual department buildings, and in West cafeteria.

Visual Impairments

Signs and wayfinding

Large white-on-blue sign at entrance to ‘Cavendish Laboratory’. Small, clear, white-on-grey directional signposting around site.

Lighting

Proper overhead street lighting, and good lighting round most buildings.

Planned Access Improvements

The site is still under construction — all new buildings will be fully accessible.
