General Information

The Faculty is housed on the third floor of Raised Faculty Building; the Casimir Lewy Library is located on the second floor — see also entry for the Faculty of Modern and Medieval Languages.

Smoking

Smoking is not permitted anywhere in the building.

Medical facilities

There are several first aiders in the building and elsewhere on the Sidgwick Site.

Emergency procedures

Evacuation chairs have been fitted. Staff have had training on the use of evacuation chairs. Faculty staff are there during office hours. The Disability Liaison Officer is happy to help with emergency evacuation arrangements for use of the building out of hours if necessary. The Disability Liaison Officer is fire warden during office hours.

Physical Access

Entrances

There is level access at main entrance to the Raised Faculty Building, through two sets of glass double doors. A security swipecard system operates out of hours. Swipecard also opens glass doors automatically if required.

Number of floors

The Faculty of Philosophy is located on third floor of building, the library on the second floor.

Lifts and stairs

A lift to all floors is available via the main entrance to the Raised Faculty Building.

Lecture theatres

Most lectures take place in Lecture Block - see separate entry.

Seminar/teaching rooms

There are a small number of seminar and teaching rooms within the faculty; all are accessible. The Faculty's Boardroom is occassionally used for teaching, and is also accessible.

Library

Library and all bookshelves are accessible. Staff will fetch books and help as necessary.

Toilets

There are disabled toilets on ground floor and third floor.

Common rooms

The Common room and Old Library area of the faculty are both level and accessible.

Visual Impairments

Assistance dogs

Assistance dogs are welcome.

Large print, Braille and audio

Printed information is available in large print, and on different coloured paper, if requested in advance.

Library and magnification equipment

There is good lighting within the library. Photocopier and scanning facilities are available. There is also one height adjustable desk in the computer area, and a large letter keyboard is available on request.

Signs and wayfinding

There is good signage throughout the building and the faculty is small.

Hearing Impairments

Induction loops

Portable induction loop available.

Other

  • The library is carpeted and usually very quiet.

Specific Learning Difficulties and Mental Health Issues

The Disability Liaison Officer will take care to discuss all your needs and pass on information to lecturers and directors of studies.

Communication between the faculty and the library is very good.
