Location, Services and Transport

Addenbrooke's Site, in the main hospital building. See separate entry for Addenbrooke's Site.

General Information

The main departmental offices are located on two floors in the Herchel Smith Building, on the Addenbrooke's site. Only the ground floor is accessible for wheelchairs, as there is no lift to the first floor offices. There are offices on level E4 and level 5 of the main hospital building - all accessible. The Department of Psychiatry is part of the School of Clinical Medicine - see separate entry.

Smoking

No smoking anywhere in the building or on the Addenbrooke's Site.

Medical facilities

Located within the Hospital.

Emergency procedures

An intermittent alarm means you must prepare to evacuate. The hospital is divided into fire-proof compartments and in the event of a continuous alarm, you should move horizontally through the building to an area where the continuous alarm is not sounding.In the Herchel Smith Building, when the alarm goes you must evacuate. Designated fire wardens will sweep the building to make sure everyone has left.

Physical Access

Entrances

Level access by the main entrance to the Herchel Smith Building. In the hospital, level access from lift - use the lifts near the central concourse.

Number of floors

Main department located on ground and first floors, Herchel Smith Building. Other offices located on fourth and fifth floors in hospital.

Lifts and stairs

Herchel Smith Building - no lifts. Hospital - two large lifts to all floors.

Seminar/teaching rooms

All offices accessible and fairly spacious, with moveable furniture. Most office chairs are of adjustable height.

Computer facilities

All members have their own computers. Adaptations to help with repetitive strain injury or other difficulty can be acquired if necessary.

Toilets

No disabled toilets in department itself, but there are plenty in the main hospital building. Herchel Smith has disabled toilets.

Common rooms

Small tea room and kitchen. Cramped and difficult for a wheelchair. Hershel Smith has a large kitchen/tearoom. Wheelchair access possible.

Other

  • The Autism Research Centre and the Department of Developmental Psychiatry are located separately in Douglas House in central Cambridge. Please discuss any access needs before visiting.
  • The Cameo Psychosis Research Centre is located on the Ida Darwin Site near Fulbourn.

Special software or hardware for visually impaired users can be acquired if necessary, and has been in the past.

Library and magnification equipment

Photocopier available.

Signs and wayfinding

Large sign to department from lift. Very little internal signage, but wayfinding is not difficult.

No induction loops currently.

  • Generally carpeted and quiet.
