General Information

General

Faculty housed in Austin Robinson building. Most lectures take place in Lecture Block and Lady Mitchell Hall (see separate entries).

Smoking

No smoking anywhere in the building.

Medical facilities

First aider in building, and more on site.

Emergency procedures

Evacuation chairs available, with staff trained in their use. First floor toilet doubles as a fire refuge, and there is a refuge in the Marshall library.

Physical Access

Entrances

Level access at main entrance, through two sets of double doors. Level entrance to Marshall building opposite, with wheelchair lift to basement and mezzanine levels.

Number of floors

Five floors in total, including ground floor.

Lifts and stairs

Rather small lift (100x103x99) to first, second and third floors of Austin Robinson building. Marshall building has wheelchair lift to basement and mezzanine levels, but you must arrange in advance. Stairs have handrails.

Lecture theatres

Most lectures take place in Lecture Block and Lady Mitchell Hall — see separate entries.

Seminar/teaching rooms

Keynes seminar room on top floor of Austin Robinson building, accessed only by stairs. Other seminar and teaching rooms on mezzanine of Marshall building, with wheelchair lift access. Level inside.

Library

Second floor of Marshall building. Lift access from Austin Robinson building, but arrange in advance for the back door to be opened. Five steps or wheelchair lift to main area, which is spacious and smooth. Journals upstairs, only accessible by stairs, but staff will fetch. All stairs have handrails.

Computer facilities

Computer room in basement of Marshall building, accessed by wheelchair lift. Rather small, but with moveable chairs. Power points in library for laptops.

Toilets

Disabled toilet in basement of Marshall building, and on first floor of Austin Robinson building.

Common rooms

Graduate common room on mezzanine of Marshall building, accessed by stairlift. Faculty common room on fourth floor, only accessible by stairs.

Visual Impairments

Assistance dogs

Assistance dogs welcome.

Computer facilities

Currently no special hardware or software for visually impaired users.

Large print, Braille and audio

Large print information on prior request.

Library and magnification equipment

Good lighting in library, and extra lights on some individual desks. Photocopier available. Magnifying sheets or glasses could be acquired if needed.

Signs and wayfinding

Signs are fairly clear.

Hearing Impairments

Induction loops

Some infra-red systems in Lecture Block and induction loop in Lady Mitchell Hall — see separate entries.

Other

  • Telephones are designed for hearing aid users — switch to T.
