General Information
General
Part of the Department of Engineering, specialising in post-graduate research into industry and manufacturing. Access to the institute is fairly good, particularly if you can manage a few steps.
Smoking
No smoking anywhere in the building.
Medical facilities
First aiders are resident in the building. First aid room located in the basement and not accessible to wheelchair users.
Emergency procedures
No evacuation chairs. Notify the Disability Liaison Officer if you will need help evacuating in an emergency.
Physical Access
Entrances
Level entrance through wide doors, and a gentle slope down to reception.
Number of floors
Three floors in total, and two separate basement areas.
Lifts and stairs
One lift operating from ground level to basement laboratory area. Stairs all have continuous handrails.
Lecture theatres
Lecture room on ground floor, level and spacious, with moveable long benches.
Seminar/teaching rooms
Some laboratories at ground level, accessible, with computer controls for machinery at desk height. Seminar and meeting rooms mostly downstairs.
Computer facilities
Limited number of central computer facilities. Members have their own computers.
Toilets
No disabled toilet within the institute building. Access to disabled toilet by the Safety Office in 16 Mill Lane.
Common rooms
Common room located on ground floor, easily accessible with no steps.
Other
- Some heavy fire doors to negotiate. Corridors wide and uncluttered.
Visual Impairments
Assistance dogs
Assistance dogs welcome in the building, but please discuss in advance if you want to bring your dog into a lab.
Computer facilities
Currently no special software for visually impaired users.

Large print information on prior request.
Library and magnification equipment
Photocopier available.

Good, clear signage around the building.
