About the role

As a Practical Assistant, you'll support a disabled undergraduate student in the practical sessions on their Medical Sciences course.

The student is a wheelchair user and has Postural Tachycardia Syndrome (PoTS). The work will involve monitoring the student in practical sessions and ensuring that they are safe in the event of a fainting episode. You would need to put the student in the recovery position should they faint, remain with them until they regain consciousness and help them return to college in a taxi if necessary.

Successful candidates will be required to undertake a First Aid training course prior to work starting.

Hours of work for Michaelmas term will be around 4-8 hours per week. The schedule can vary slightly each week, but usually consists of:

  • Wednesdays, 10am-12pm
  • Thursdays, 10am-12pm
  • Some Thursday afternoon sessions

We are open to splitting the hours between two Practical Assistants, so you could still apply if you are not available for all these times.

Most practical sessions will take place in locations on the Downing Site. Please note that the work will involve going into the Dissection Room, so this is something you must be comfortable with.

You would be registered as a casual worker with the University of Cambridge Pathology department.

About you

We are looking for applicants who:

  • have experience of working with disabled people
  • have excellent communication skills
  • are able to maintain clear boundaries
  • are able to keep calm in stressful situations

First aid experience is desirable.

You must be based in Cambridge. You'll need to come to the Accessibility and Disability Resource Centre (ADRC) to complete a Right to Work check.

You must be available until least June 2025.

This role is not open to current undergraduate students.
