Screening service for specific learning difficulties (SpLD), ADHD and autism

We offer a screening service for students who think they may have:

  • a SpLD such as dyslexia, dyspraxia, dysgraphia and dyscalculia
  • ADHD
  • autism

A screening can help identify if you have traits of a condition. We'll then give you advice about whether you need a full diagnostic assessment.

We recommend that you speak to your College tutor if you’re experiencing difficulties that impact your studies.

Who can use the screening service

You can use the screening service if:

  • you're having significant difficulties with daily learning or educational functioning
  • you think these difficulties are as a result of undiagnosed dyslexia, dyspraxia, dysgraphia, ADHD or autism

and

  • you do not already have a diagnosis of dyslexia, dyspraxia, dysgraphia, ADHD or autism
  • you have not already told the Accessibility and Disability Resource Centre (ADRC) about a disability or a mental health condition

If you meet the criteria to use the screening service

  1. Email adrcscreening@admin.cam.ac.uk to book an appointment with one of our qualified professionals.
  2. We'll complete a screening assessment with you.
  3. We'll give you advice about how to get a diagnosis, where appropriate.

If you don’t meet the criteria to use the screening service

You can explore one or more of the options below.

Speak to your adviser

Email your disability adviser if you’re already in touch with us and feel that your support needs are not being met. Your adviser will review your support and make any additional recommendations.

Take an online screener

You could take an online screener. We don't recommend any specific screening tool. An example of an online screener is Do-it Profiler Neurodiversity Profiler +. It can screen for a specific learning difficulty, ADHD or autism. The screening costs around £72.

Get an educational assessment

You could have a full diagnostic educational assessment for a specific learning difficulty and ADHD. It can't assess you for autism. Email disability@admin.cam.ac.uk to get a list of diagnostic assessors who are quality assured by the University. The assessment costs £525.

If you need medication for ADHD contact your doctor or GP to ask for a referral to the National Health Service (NHS) Adult ADHD clinic.

Get a medical assessment for autism

Make an appointment with your doctor or GP to ask for a referral to the NHS autism diagnostic services.

Accessing diagnostic clinics through the National Health Service (NHS)

There may be a long waiting list for ADHD and autism diagnosis through the NHS. Ask your GP about your 'right to choose' an alternative clinic as it may reduce the wait. Find out more about your choices in the NHS.
